Tricks and* treats

Remember the days when your mom would give you a treat whenever you do something good? You'd clean your bicycle and get a jalebi or arrange your dad's bookshelf and get a chocolate. It's like instant good karma. Ever since then, it's been instilled in people's minds that junk food is a reward, that it is special. That's when the idea of junk food starts getting glorified. We can do the little things to change this. We can still have delicious food, just not unhealthy ones.

Think about this. You're coming home after a rough day of school and you REALLY need something to boost you up. The second you enter your home, you can smell something cooking in the kitchen. Ahhhh, it's mom's special fish gravy with steaming hot idlis. Vegetarian household? It's the same idlis but with mom's special veg Kurma. These heart warming food items do not just give you energy, but also give you a sense of pure satisfaction. This is how you start inculcating healthy food habits in children. They must know that healthy doesn't necessarily mean yucky.

Children tend to refuse to try new things but once they're used to certain things, they don't complain. Ease them into it. Slowly get them used to healthy food. They might oppose at first but eventually, they will get used to it. Starting with fruits is always the best way. Fruits are both delicious and healthy. The only reason kids don't eat a lot of fruits is because they know they're healthy and there's an illusion in their minds that healthy is gross. Once they are functioning adults, they'll realise the importance of eating healthy, especially after their first back ache. So, grab a fruit and get going.
