Since our childhood days we know,
with the start of New Year the first festival, a year begins with is Makar
Sankranti, what is this Makar Sankranti? What religious importance does this
festival hold? These and many more such questions come to our mind whenever we
think of this festival and why is it named so…
Makar is one of the zodiac signs
out of the twelve zodiac signs in the science of astrology. The transit of Sun
in this sign, which is called Capricorn in English and this festival is in
the month of winter. It is a festival of peace and prosperity and religiously people
go for a bath in holy rivers like Ganga, Godavari, Yamuna and many more. The day
before Makar Sankranti is called Lohri, festival which marks with the harvest of
Rabi crops and end of winter. But due to globalization, the onset of any season
has no specific months.
As this festival comes in winter,
there is a huge importance of til (Sesame seeds) ladoos are made using til,
jaggery and some dry fruits and relished in this festival. There is a popular
saying in Maharashtrians for Makar Sankranti while giving til ladoos they say “til
gul ghya ani god god bola” which means have til ladoo and speak sweet like
jaggery. This recipe has its own medicinal
value in this season to keep the body temperature warm in chilling winters. This the festival also has importance of flying kites especially in Gujarat, lots of
people travel to Gujarat to enjoy Makar Sankranti and to enjoy flying kites,
rooftops are filled with people and sky with colorful kites
